I looked in my CRANE downloads and found the family you mention (the one with Aretas). This post says Aretas is male and marr to a Daniel DOTY. One thing I didn't mention is that the information Jan posted came from "John Littell’s 1852 Family Records or Genealogies of the First Settlers of Passaic Valley" (words in quotes taken directly from post #1479).

I have deleted a couple dozen names from what Jan posted but I left on the names of (child #6) Joseph (marr/Sally BEBOUT) and his sister (#11) Betsey (marr/Daniel DOTY).
Of Joseph's children, I left on (#1) William and (#5) Aretas (marr Daniel DOTY) and (#9) Catherine (marr/Daniel DOTY).
And, William's son, (#8) Jacob CRANE.
Is the Daniel DOTY (who marr Catherine CRANE) and (nephew) Jacob CRANE, be the two mentioned in the Linn Co, history book?
As for the gender of Aretas...could the 1852 book be incorrect? I do note that Aretas' and Catherine's Daniel DOTY's are from two different people, John and Daniel.
