seeking parents of Joseph Doty. Following is the information I have so far. I really need documation to tie this Joseph to his parents. JOSEPH DOTY BORN: 1812 – 1818 1812– Born in Ohio according to 1900 Census 1813- Born in New York according to 1870 census 1815- Year Born according to 1852 Marriage Certificate (2nd marriage). 1816- Born in New York according to 1850 Census 1816- Born in New York according to 1860 Census 1818- Born in Ontario Co. New York according to Military records. (Civil War) WHERE: Ontario County, New York or Ohio (1821 Boundaries of Ontario Co.& Monroe changed.Possibly why Ontario Co. Was listed as place of birth on Civil War records.) CENSUS: 1840: Joseph Doty was in Perinton, Monroe County New York. “there was a male child less than 5 yrs. old. this would of been William, One male 20-30 yrs.(My Joseph would of been abt. 24 yrs. in 1840. One female 20-30 yrs. old. probably Joseph 1st wife. 1850: Joseph in Eckford, Calhoun County, Michigan. Joseph is 34 years old. Born in New York, has 5 children in household, no wife. William age 10, b. New York Daniel age 8, b. New York Mary age 6, b. New York Henrietta age 4 b. Michigan John E. age 2 b. Michigan 1870: JOSEPH,ELIZA DOATY & children:James,Mondy Oscar,Edward,Joseph, Willis,Doaty. Were living at: Madison Twps. Clarke Co. Iowa, P.O. Murray, Iowa. (NOTICE: the spelling of Doty) Sideline note: Joseph & 1st wife apparently moved from New York to Michigan Ca. 1844-1846. This 1st wife apparently died in Michigan Ca. 1848-1850 since she doesn’t show up on the census. On the same census page just a couple households later there is the following: Edwin Doty age 30 Male B. N.Y. Betsey Doty age 70 female B. N.J. Dorcas Doty age 40 female B. N.J. this could be Joseph’s brother (Edwin), Mother (Betsey) and sister (Dorcas). This would mean that Joseph parents lived in New Jersey in 1810 (Dorcas’s approximate birthdate & moved into Ontario County, N.Y. ca. 1812-1818. Joseph’s younger brother Edwin was also born in N.Y.ca. 1820. Update: June 1999 Circumstantial evidence drawn from census and deeds suggests that my Joseph Doty was the son of an older Joseph Doty who resided with his family in the town of Farmington, Ontario Co. New York at least from the mid-1810’s until probably the late 1830’s. By 1839, the elder Joseph Doty had moved with his wife Betsey, sons Edwin and Stephen, and daughter Dorcas to Calhound Co. Michigan. The elder Joseph Doty apparently died in the 1840’s in calhound Co. Michigan. The younger Joseph Doty, recently married, remained behind in New York living in the Town of Perinton, Monroe Co. From the ages of his children in 1850, I know that he moved to Calhound Co, Michigan in abt 1845, possibly following the death of his father. On the basis of available information, the younger Joseph Doty, born abt 1816, probably was the older man’s eldest son and fifth child. His brothers Edwin, and Stephen probably were born abt 1818 and 1820 respectively. Dorcas and another sister of the younger Joseph Doty probably were born between 1805 and a fifth sister born in the early 1820’s. The elder Joseph Doty was born abt 1775 and his wife Betsey was born abt 1780. Since both Betsey and presumed daughter Dorcas were born in New Jersey, it seems likely that the family migrated from New Jersey to Ontario Co. New York between abt 1810 and 1815. Update: July, 2000 – Further research efforts to try to prove the Parentage of my “Joseph Doty” has produced mixed results thus far. Some helpful information was found, but concrete answers continue to be elusive. 1880 Census returns for Kansas and Michigan provide support for the supposition that my “Joseph Doty” and Stephen Doty of Michigan were brothers. For both men, their mother was listed as being born in New Jersey, adding to the likelihood that the Betsey Doty of the 1850 Calhound County, Michigan census could be their mother. However, contradictory census entries make it unclear whether their father was born in New York or New Jersey. According to census, Stephen Doty lived in Carlton, Twp, Barry County, Michigan, which is adjacent to Calhound Co. From at least 1850 to 1880. He was no longer in Barry Co. in 1894. Apparently, neither Stephen Doty nor his wife died in Barry County. The actual deed records for the Doty land purchases and sales in Calhound Co., Michigan were reviewed. Three different tracts were involved. The records identified Stephen Doty’s wife as Hannah and made it possible to determine that the Barry Co. Stephen was the correct man. Also, the sales dates suggested possible movement dates. Nothing was found to establish the whereabouts of fate of Edwin, Betsey, and Dorcas Doty after 1850. Also, nothing was found concerning estate records for the elder Joseph Doty. Farmington, New York Quaker records did not provide any information with regard to my Dotys. Deed records for Ontario and Monroe Counties in New York were quickly rechecked, but nothing useful was found. Date: Dec. 21, 2001 –there was a Rachel Doty, age 30 that died April 1850 in Calhoun Co. MI, she was born in NY, her residence at time of death was: Eckford,& she died of Consumption. (This might have been Joseph’s 1st wife as he remarried Dec. 1852 to Mrs. Eliza Monda.) Update: Jan. 28,2002 – Mary Pettinger enumerated with Joseph Doty in 1850 could this be his Mother-in-law? Assuming that Mary was related in some way, she may tie In with the John Pettinger recorded in the town of Farmington, Ontario County, New York in the 1840 Census. In my New Jersey research, I noticed that there were Pittengers there. MARRIAGE: 1852 DECEMBER 30, CASS COUNTY MICHIGAN.
