I'm confused about children attributed to Edward and Faith Doty/Doten, and also to John Phillips by a prior marriage. In the will of John Phillips (Faith's second husband), it says that if John dies before Faith (which he did), 2/3 of his property is to be divided among his surviving children by his first marriage, and 1/3 is for use by Faith until she dies. As executor of his will, Faith divided his property between Elizabeth Rouse, Desire Sherman, and Mary Doten. Coincidentally, these are the names of three daughters of Faith by her first marriage to Edward Doty. Desire Doty married William Sherman, Elizabeth Doty married John Rouse, and Mary Doty was unmarried. Has anyone untangled this mystery? Did all of John Phillips' children die before him, so Faith distributed the property to the neediest of her own children, or are there really two sets of equally named people in both families?
