I was interested to read another's research on Thomas Doss in Pittsylvania County. I did not know Judah's parents' names. Then I read
an excerpt from The History of Pittsylvania County on ancestry.com that noted James Doss had been re-imbursed for providing clothing, etc. for his ward, Judah May. The following is the excerpt preceded by a note I posted to another list:
Thomas Eads, who m. Elizabeth Allford, also in Campbell Co. VA. Among
their children were:
Joseph EADS, b. 1780 in Campbell Co. who d. April 12, 1853, in Morgan's Bottom, Mason Co., VA. Joseph married Judah (Julia) DOSS on Sept. 27, 1802 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
The History of Pittsylvania Co.Virginia (records 781-790 of 1937) on ancestry.com:
"THE HISTORY of PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA
EARLY CHURCHES IN PITTSYLVANIA
THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
To Lewis Morgan a Reader 6 mos 50 lbs. Tob.
To George Rowland for necessaries found Milly
Harris 33 lbs. Tob.
To James Doss for maintaining Judah May and finding her clothing 600lbs. Tob.
I would appreciate any light anyone can shed upon this entry. Does this seem to indicate that Judah Doss's original name was "Judah May"? was James Doss her guardian? The passage in this book lists 2 other entries under Doss: for "Doss's Road" and "Doss's [property?]".
Any information would be appreciated.
