Regan,Beginning in 1850 the census takers recorded all deaths that occurred between July 1849 and June 1850 (obviously changed in other census years, e.g., 1860). Those lists are published as the Mortality Index for each state and the Iowa index should be available in all major libraries in the Iowa area. Do you live there? If you look her up, you will find a lot of information, including place of birth, cause of death, etc. You might also want to find out when Iowa began recording deaths. I doubt it was that early, but it may have been. A death record might name her parents. I assume you're looking for the wife of a man named Doss. Is that correct? Do you know his name? Have you looked for him in the census in 1850? Any clues about him at all? Men are much easier to identify than women -- more records. There is one Rhoda Doss born about that time who comes to mind. Her grandson did move to Iowa. Tell me your line from Rhoda and I'll know if it's the same one. Libbie
