Wanda,

I'm just now getting a chance to enter some Ky. 1880 soundex info into my database, although I collected it several months ago. I have found information on your family, but it differs from the information you have in several significant ways, and I think it may help you. Here's what I found:

Harlan Co. Ky. 1880 soundex, 11-47-12-20: William DAss, white, male, age 53, b. Ky.; Nancy (somewhat unclear), wife, 43, b. Ky; Oscar, son, 13; Stephenson, son, 11; Mandy (Maudy?), daughter, 8; Sidney, son, 6; Ludey, dtr., 4; Mary, daughter, 1; all children born in Kentucky.

This compares to the information you have, which is in part, "In addition to Stephenson, b. 1849, their children were: Olean, b. 1847; Maudy, b. 1852, Sidney, b. 1854, Judy, b. 1856, Mary, b. 1859. It appears that someone gave you information based on the 1880 census but with the math done as if it were the 1860 census. In other words, the people you're looking for are 20 years younger than you think. Also, it appears that Stephenson was Mary's brother, not her father, and that William was her father. Finally, they are in Harlan, Ky. not in Lee Co. Va.

Perhaps this will help?

Libbie
