Darlene, That Dorsett was Charles William Dorsett. Married to Martha Engle the first women lawyer in Minnesota. Charles was a lawyer too but at that time the state would not allow husband and wife to practice. See Mpls. Tribune newspaper, GOPHER TALES, by Blake Haddon copyright 1936 sketch shows Mrs. Dorsett before the judge..note's "In 1876, thru her efforts and those of her husband, also a lawyer, a bill was passed changing the state law prohibiting women from practicing law...." He became a caterer and confectioner on 7th and Hennepin (I think). Contact your historical society in St.Paul for a biographical sketch in the book A HALF CENTURY OF MINNEAPOLIS. Look up his obituary in the Minneapolis Journal March 7, 1936. He was a candidate for govenor on the Prohibition party ticket. Lucy Peugh was one of his adopted daughters...she was like a grandma to me...she was 16 and helped Martha and Charles William Dorsett raise my father, Preston. Preston's father Daniel Hanks Dorsett (brother to Charles) died in Salt Lake City, UT, Nov. 1907. Preston was just few months old, the youngest of five and only son (other than two boys by his first marriage to Ellen Shepherd). Daniel was 62 yrs. He was in the process of building their home and lived on Browning Street, Salt Lake City, Ut. I am searching for information on Daniel and his second wife Marie Matilda Petersen Dorsett...from (Norway). I have wonderful letters from him written while in Utah..they were there about 10 yrs around 1900.
The Dorsett home you speak about in Mpls. you say it was a large home near the Univ. Lucy lived in a 16 room home near Marcy School and within walking distance to the Univ. My mother met Preston while boarding with her sister at the home. Charles William also lived at 2639 Bryant Ave. So. in Mpls.
Now Darlene, tell me how you became interested in Chas. Wm.? Are you or were you a student at the Univ.? I have been searching for information on Daniel and Marie Dorsett since 1974. I draw a blank on Marie...and I understand from relatives she came over as a domestic for Chas. Wm. and family.
The Dorsett family traces back to Eastford, CT. After that Daniel Brewster Dorsett and Harriet Fox Preston moved to Sinclairville, NY and then to Jamestown, NY. Daniel Brewster Dorsett built the De'Orsay apartment building..which has been taken down...but the historical society had a lovey photo of what it was like...the historian remembered the property...which was fun. The Dorsett genealogy can be found in "Bowen's Genealogy of Woodstock (CT) Families"
