To anyone searching for info on William Doris (taken from newspaper clipping)
Sad Death of Wm. Doris
On Wednesday morning between 2 and 3 o'clock, night watchman O'Rorke discovered a blaze in the office of Dr. Moore's livery. On forcing the door, he found Wm. Doris who was an employee, lying on the floor in a state of insensibility with every article of clothing burned from his body. An alarm was given and assistance soon arrived when the unfortunate young man was removed to the Dunham House. Drs. Waters and Ivey were summoned, and after a careful examination they found that Doris' legs, body and one arm were burned almost to a crisp. Every effort was put forth by the physicians to afford the sufferer relief, but both gentlemen were of the opinion that he could not recover. We understand from some who saw Doris that his case was a distressing one and that nothing less than a miracle could save his life. He was removed to the old North American Hotel, where his sister, Mrs. James Eagan resides, and although everything possible was done to make him comfortable, he died about 8 o'clock on Thursday morning. Just how the unfortunate affair occurred is a mystery, but it is surmised that he retired to the office for the night after working hard all day and sat down in a chair by the stove to have a smoke before going to his bed. He evidently fell asleep and the cigar dropping on his clothing set fire to them, causing a partial stupor or suffocation from which he did not rally in time to save himself from the fatal burning. He was a young man well known about town and was highly respected. The damage to the building was of small account, and can be repaired for a small amount.
(Note...no date was given & also it is believe that when they referred to 'town' it was Cobour (Ontario, Canada). I'm not researching this name but had the info & wanted to post it in hopes that it might help someone)
