SOUTH GARDINER -- Juanita D. Leighton, 87, of River Road died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge.
She was born in Bangor on Sept. 9, 1916, a daughter of Charles and Lillian Bell Dore. Juanita loved her family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was very caring and had a great sense of humor. Many, many, friends -- and especially her bridge-playing friends -- loved her.
She was predeceased by her husband, M. Roger Leighton; her son, David R. Leighton; her sister, Dorothy Rogers; and three brothers, Reginald Dore, Charles "Buzz" Dore and Beverly Dore.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Leighton and Darlene Grover, both of Farmingdale; daughter-in-law Margaret Briggs of Winthrop; her sister, Bernice Leighton of South Gardiner; five grandchildren, Steve Leighton, John Leighton, Gregg Leighton, Shannon Robbins and Stephanie Grover; four great-grandchildren, Sarah and Carly Leighton and Noah and Mary Robbins; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
