Therese- there are two main Dore names. The first is the French "Doré", pronounced Door-ray, and the second, without the accent is Irish (most commonly, and pronounced Door. The 1st Doré to North America arrived in Québec around 1665-66, and his name was Louis. He is the father of the Doré's in Canada. The American line of his descendants immigrated to Pittsfield Massachusetts around 1890, and his name was Théophile, and his son Charles Jean-Baptiste, went to Ohio, in the early 1900's. On Mass. census, the name appears as "Dauray". According to the "Ancient Names of France", there were two Doré names --"BARBIER du DORé" and "DORé, DORé GRASLIN". It states that "the very ancient name of Doré in Bretagne, Poitou, Touraine is cited in Bretagne in 1273. It appears that this is the line Louis is from, having been born in the Poitou-Angoumois region, in the village of Vivier (or Yviers) Jusseau in Angoumois. It means fish pond in English. The Barbier line is from Touraine noted in the 17th century. And it is possible this is a connection to the Poitou-Angoumois line, as they are all very nearby. I don't have any reseach on the Dores of Ireland.
