William Reid, in his monumental work, "Sons and Daughters of American Loyalists" unfortunately made the assumption that the Loyalist Peter Dopp of Augusta and Montague was the same Peter Dopp of Marysville who married Deborah Farrington. Careful review of the documents shows that this is not the case, but his assumption has mislead several Dopp researchers. I want to help set the record straight and to try to disentangle the two lines. The Peter Dopp who married Deborah Farrington received land in Marysburg Township, which is in Prince Edward County, Ontario (which juts out into Lake Ontario below Belleville). He is mentioned in several lists and muster rolls from 1785 to 1790. Rev. John Langhorn's register has the baptisms of Deborah (9 Mar 1788, as an adult) and their two sons David (9 Mar 1788) and Peter (22 Mar 1789). Langhorn also notes that Deborah's parents are Stephen and Charity Farrington. The register explicitly mentions that the family was at Marysburg. This Peter Dopp family did not stay long in Ontario; they were back in New York by 1796 when Stephen Dopp was born. From New York this family moved to Vermillion, Erie Co, Ohio and eventually settled in Reading, Hillsdale, Michigan. Also in this family are David who married Polly (David b. abt 1800 is too young to be the son who was baptized by Langhorn who therefore must have died young), Abijah and almost certainly, based on the 1850 Michigan census, John (b. 1797) who married Mary T., and Gamaliel. As for the other Peter Dopp, Augusta and Montague townships are further north along the St. Lawrence River between Brockville and Prescott. They are almost 100 miles distant from Marysburg. The Peter Dopp of Augusta and Montague was married to Tamson Nettleton. She was the daughter of another Loyalist, Daniel Nettleton. The relationship is spelled out in one of her land petitions. They stayed in Canada and are the parents of all of the Dopps who petitioned for land as sons or daughters of Loyalists, namely David, Charity (m. Adolphus Armstrong), Henry and Phoebe (m. Ebenezer Simons). There was at least one other sister. So far her name is unknown to me, but she married Stilman Smith and they lived in Eramosa Tp, Wellington Co, Ontario beside Charity and Adolphus Armstrong. Interestingly, one of the papers filed with Phoebe's DUE application is a letter from David Dopp that says that her father Peter moved to Yarmouth Tp (near St. Thomas in south-western Ontario) in 1835 and was still alive in 1840 "upwards of at least 90 years of age". David and Henry from this family also moved to Michigan before 1850, but settled close to the Ontario border in St. Clair and Sanilac Townships. The 1850 census also strongly suggests that both David and Henry also spent some years in New York (roughly 1824-36) before returning to Ontario (where David N. Dopp married Jemima Dean in Yarmouth Tp in 1840) and then moving on to Michigan. One other Loyalist Dopp about I have no further information is Adam Dopp who was awarded land beside the Peter in Augusta. All this begs the question: which Peter was the son of David Dopp and Rachel Ostrander? And who are the parents of the other one? (I see for example in David C. Dopp's family tree a first cousin Peter Dopp son of Marthan b. in 1760 which could be either one.) Hope this helps. Russ McGillivray Notify Administrator about this message?
