My husbands greatgrandmother is also Maggie Gains, my husband is named ater James Nathaiel his great grandfather. That makes you cousins.
We are looking for the Cherokee in the Maggie Gains side.My father inlaw William Wesley Ammerman before he passed away said that his great great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee but refused to talk about it. I have been trying to find answers and learned that because of Walter Plecker , and the "one drop " statute which created two racial categories "pure white" and everybody else. , Plecker being head of Virginias Bureau of Vital Statistig from 1912-1946 had Indians listed as Black,mulattoes,or mixed. You can look up the Walter Plecker letters on the internet. Its enought to make one cry, If you know of Indian blood anywhere I would be most greatful .
