The RCs probably kept the most and most consistent rcds until mandatory civil registration. Both civil and church rcds existed in parallel. There are problems with ALL Irish rcds. Here are a few: 1) Not all B/M/D events were rcd'd once they began. 2) Some of the rcds which did survive (especially protestant) failed to list all family information. (Some not even the date!) 3) Some of the rcds are wholly or partially illegible. 4) There are transcription errors. 5) Some priests were fond of using abbreviations such as "Michl" for Michael and Pat, Patt, Pat'k etc for Patrick etc. 6) B/M/D registration was civil after 1863. Sometimes the local registration district kept copies while sending the originals to Dublin to a central repository, some didn't. Most of the originals in Dublin were destroyed in the Four Courts fire of 1922 thanks to the IRA. Notify Administrator about this message?
