Matthew Donovan was my Great Great Great Grandfather, he was born in 1797 a Native of County Meath. His parents are unknown to us. Matthew was a Carman, and rode with Michael Collier and his Highwayman Gang, took part in at least two known Robberries on the Derry Mail Coach in Jan + Apr 1823 was caught tried and convicted in June 1823 at Trim Court, sentenced to Life and Transportation to the Penal Colony of New South Wales. Matthew was sent out onboard the Prince Regent arriving in New South Wales in 1824. Matthew lived at Garristown Bog, before his trial. There were six other men convicted with Matthew, for the same Robberries. Patrick McCormick, John Rielly, Michael Smyth, Edward Flood, James Kelly and Anthony Donovan unknown if related to Matthew.

I would like to hear from any family of Mattew who were left in Ireland, as we do not know if he had siblings or not. I live in Melbourne, Australia
Regards Margaret
