O'Donovan-Iland 1845
Posted by: Peter O'Donovan-Iland Date: January 25, 1999 at 13:24:44

Does anyone have any clues as to the background of my surname. I only know that my Great grandfather came to UK from Ireland sometime between 1845-1872. I do not know how the surname came about. Is it a combination of names due marriage or as has been suggested to me O'Donovan of the island ? Any ideas anyone ? As far as I can ascertain he was born in Ireland in 1845 as Patrick O'Donovan-Island, came to live in London and married an Emma Simmons, and one son, Daniel O'Donovan-Iland. Somehow the name was changed or just misspelt on registering. Any ideas
