The following is a history that I hope that someone out on the internet can help me with. I am the 8th Grandson of Nixon Covey and I am looking for his parents. Please read and if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate all you could do. 1. NIXON1 COVEY was born March 01, 1791 in Havre-De-Grace, Harford Co MD, and died June 20, 1879 in Estill Co KY. He married SUSAN WILLOUGHBY May 08, 1828 in Montgomery Co KY1, daughter of WILLIAM WILLOUGHBY and PHEBY. She was born February 22, 1811 in Montgomery Co KY, and died March 10, 1881 in Estill Co KY. Notes for NIXON COVEY: Legend has it that Nixon Covey was from Havre de Grace, and that he changed his name when he came to Kentucky after killing a man. His name may have been Donavan or Donahue. Legend also has that he came from a wealthy family, and from the looks of his education for that period of time, some part of the legend may be true. Records also indicate that Nixon fought in the war of 1812. The below text is from "Recollections of Breathitt" by J. Green Trimble, pub. 1916 when he was 91 years of age. www.breathittcounty.com/TrimblesBook.html "Rev. Nixon Covey was originally from Montgomery county and was a school teacher by profession. He located at Hazel Green in 1839, and taught school there until he moved to Jackson. He was converted by the preaching of "Raccoon" John Smith at Hazel Green, who was one of the most distinguished ministers of the Christian church in Kentucky. After he joined the church, Mr. Covey commenced preaching the next day, and continued to preach until his death, which occurred in Estill county about twenty years ago. He taught school in Breathitt county until about the beginning of the Civil War. Previous to his conversion he was a wicked and dissipated man." Nixon came to Estill Co. KY about 1856 and remained there until his death. He was a baptist preacher and traveled extensively rather than pastor a church in his county. All records indicate that he lived in the White Oak or Chestnut Stand area of Estill Co. and he and his wife Susan are buried in unmarked graves on White Oak in what was called the Cool Spring Cemetery. (source: unknown author?) According to Janice Sexton, Nixon and his wife are buried in the following location. Take Hwy 89 out of Irvine towards Winchester. A little ways out side of Irvine you turn right onto White Oak Rd. Travel until you see the a large church on the right with a cemetery. Nixon and Susan are buried near the very large oak tree. There are no markers. The 1830 Montgomery Co KY census (pg 5) lists Nixon Covey living in Jeffersonville. In 1840 Nixon is found on the Morgan Co census on pg 311. In 1850 Nixon is listed as a 59 year old Clergyman in the Breathitt Co KY census reel 193, pg 22. In 1860 and 1870 Nixon can be found in the Estill Co KY census. His occupation is listed as minister in 1860 and teacher in 1870. Notify Administrator about this message?
