Ancestors on my mother's side were Donnelly. Earliest ones I can track are John (b. Ireland in 1923 and died in Port Ewen NY) in 1908. In his later years he wore a large white beard and carried a cane which he pounded on the floor while regaling those around him with stories of how he courted Queen Victoria's Ladies-in-Waiting. He was born in Ireland and because of his association with Queen Victori I am assuming he may have come from Northern Ireland. His wife was Ellen Donnelly (her maiden name but no relative). She was born in Ireland in 1832 and died in Port Ewen NY in 1908. Most of the men in the family for the subsequent four generations worked on boats on the NYS canals (Delaware and Hudson, and Erie, and the Hudson River where they were tugboat pilots and captains along the river and in the Port of New York. Looking for any information anyone has and will share what I have about 100 Donnellys and related familiy members.
