Hi Lillian,

It’s wonderful to read your message in GenForum and to find another DONNALLY/DONALLY family researcher. Please let me update you on where I am in my research on the DONALLY family. Morgan BUNN, who answered my original query, has provided me with some terrific new information about this family. Her family, which descends from the glovemakers of Lewisburg, Greenbrier, Co., WV, has been researching for years and has sorted out a lot which has been confusing.

According to Morgan’s information, Dominick DONALLY (ca 1760-bef 1822) was the father of not only my ancestor, Mary (DONALLY) ATKESON (1778-1854), but also your husband’s ancestor, James DONALLY (aft 1770-?), who married Rachel BLAKE (ca1784-aft 1850). She knows because she is also a descendant of James* through his son Charles. Her line comes from Williams’ brother Hugh Wilson. (*Whether he was a James John or a John James is not known to me. It has been the first I have heard of his middle name.) A marriage bond and license for Mary DONALLY and John ATKESON (1768-1823), dated 1801, has been in private hands for several years now. To my knowledge these documents have never appeared in print. These original documents identify Dominick DONALLY and his wife Honor as the parents of Mary. Combine this with the court documents I cited earlier in these messages, which list the children of Dominick, and you have a large portion of the family group which was contemporaneous to Col. Andrew DONALLY, but not descended from him. The Andrew DONALLY (1758-?) in dispute with Dominick DONALLY was Dominick’s brother who was married to an Ann or Agnes ROBINSON. It appears that there was a sibling dispute as to who was the rightful inheritor of the secret leather tanning formulas used in their family glovemaking business. Andrew didn’t inherit and therefore felt justified in hauling his brother into court over the matter. Their father was also an Andrew DONALLY (ca1730?) who was born in Ireland, as were both his sons Andrew and Dominick. I am currently in the process of obtaining as many sources as possible to corroborate this new information.

Whatever information you have which links Charles Lockhart DONNALLY to his parents, James and Rachel, would be greatly appreciated. Morgan and I are trying to fill out the information on James which is pretty sparse. Please let me know if there is any of this information that you need. If you would like, I could generate a report for you which includes what I have on the DONALLY/DONNALLYs to date. I am interested also in the descendants of Charles DONALLY and his wife Cynthia WILLIAMS. Anything you can send my way would be greatly appreciated.

It’s great to meet you, Lillian. By the way, I tried to email to your listed email address, liljdonnally@aol.com, but the email was returned.
