I'm researching Charles Clark Donnelly for a friend of mine. He was her gr-grandfather. (He was a firefighter and helped extinguish the Great Chicago Fire.) She has given me a few of her family documents to aid in my search, some of which are transcribed below. Her grandmother was Elizabeth Donnelly (9-6-1883/?) who married Le Roy Logan Edmonson (7-15-1889 St. Augustine, IL/1-10-1936). By providing the information below, I'm hoping to connect with someone who can tell me more about this prominent family. Sit back and relax if you've decided to read this message! :o) I'm posting a great deal of info here. The following documents are transcribed below: the obit of Charles C. Donnelly from the Clifton Advocate dated 4-19-1928; the obit of Mrs. Donnelly (his wife) from the Clifton Advocate dated 4-6-1916; the Portrait And Biographical Record of Charles C. Donnelly (I do not know the name of the book this came from, but it appears to have come from some sort of encyclopedia.); and a transcription of a Bible page from his father's Bible (I do not know who this info was obtained from.) OBIT OF CHARLES C. DONNELLY (Clifton Advocate, Clifton, IL, dated 4-19-1928) Slowly are the men and women of our elder years departing this life for rest and wll earned reward and as we use our daily walks of life to see them laid away it brings pangs of sorrow and regret to our hearts. Last Saturday the third of our aged group was laid away in a period of less than six months, this time it being Mr. Charles C. Donnelly, who for the past number of years has been practically bedfast. Mr. Donnelly passed away Thursday evening, April 12th, being at the age of close to 81 years. Mr. Donnelly, had for the past a number of years been ailing, and all that was known to medical science was done for him, this was augmented with the care of kind and loving hands, but despite all this he could not survive and after about three or four years of illness he passed away. Charles C. Donnelly, son of Robert J. and Sarah Clark Donnelly, was born in Westville, New York, on June 27th, 1847. He grew to manhood in New York state, and when still quite young, came to Chicago and entered the service of the Chicago Fire Department. He remained with the Department a number of years. On December 24th, 1873, Mr. Donnelly was united in mariage, in Chicago, to Miss Jennie Simpson, who was born in Canada, and reared and educated in Chicago. To this union have been born six children, Robert J. of Clifton, Charles C. of Chicago, Agnes Monroe, Clifton, Francis M. of Chicago, Elizabeth Edmonson, Elmhurst IL and Sarah Wilson of Clifton. In the year 1883, he moved to the homestead south of Clifton, where he lived until retiring a number of years ago. Since his residence in Clifton he has lived practically all his years in the residence which he built several years ago. Mr. Donnelly was a man who possessed a cheerful disposition and all from the older to the younger generation knew him. It was always with a kind word and cheery greeting that he would meet one. The funeral services were conducted at the home of the deceased Saturday afternoon being in charge of the Rev. Mr. D.K. Sailor. Music was given by a male quartette. Following the church services, the Masonic order, of which Mr. Donnelly had long been a member, took charge with E.W. Harling, H.D. Lutton and F.W. Meents, assisted by the male quartette, officiating. Following these solemn rites, the body was conveyed to the Ashkum Cemetery, where six of his Masonic brethren laid him to rest, namely, T.C. Brown, E.R. Wilson, C.H. Monroe, C.H. Spies, C.P. Werkau and G. Sanders. OBIT OF MRS. DONNELLY (Clifton Advocate, Clifton, IL, dated 4-6-1916) Mrs. Charles C. Donnelly died at her home in Clifton Friday morning, March 31, 1916, aged 68 years, 6 months and 22 days. She leaves her husband, six children, four grandchildren, and one sister. Jennie Simpson, the daughter of James and Mary Simpson, was born in Canada October 9, 1857. When a child she moved to the United States and settled in Chicago, and there remained until she grew to womanhood. On December 24, 1873 she was united in marriage to Mr. Charles C. Donnelly. They remained in Chicago ten years, and then, in 1883, moved to a farm two miles south of Clifton, upon which they lived until they moved to town about ten years ago. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly; all survive her. They are Robert, of Clifton, Charles, of Chicago, Agnes (Mrs. H.J. Monroe,) of Clifton, Frank, of Chicago, Elizabeth (Mrs. Leroy Edmondson), and Sarah (Mrs. B.C. Wilson) of Martinton. A sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Pettit, resides in Chicago. Until the last two or three years Mrs. Donnelly had enjoyed good health, but since that time she has been failing; and, although there was no hope of recovery, no one heard her complain. She was cheerful, kindly, sympathetic, forgetting her own ailments in her interest for others. She was a Methodist, and quietly, faithfully and consistently kept the faith, and the church loses in her a staunch supporter and a loyal friend. The sympathy of many friends goes out to the beraved (sic) husband and family in their great sorrow. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. T.J.M. Crapp, pastor of the M.E. church, where held in the home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Burial was made in the Ashkum cemetery. The pall bearers were Messre. Lewis Arbogast, C.L. Lofton, W.C. Hobson, Robert Hobson, L.E. Vansant and C.M. Brork. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD - CHARLES C. DONNELLY (source unknown) Charles C. Donnelly, a leading farmer of Ashkum Township, makes his home on section 15. He is a native of the Empire State, his birth having occurred in Ontario County, on the 27th of June 1850. He is a son of Robert and Sarah (Clark) Donnelly, both natives of the Emerald Isle and who resided there until their marriage. In 1848, the father decided to make his home in the New World and accordingly emigrated in that year, settling in Ontario County, N.Y., where he resided for a number of years. In 1867, he removed Westward to Illinois and settled on land where his son now resides, situated in Iroquois County. Mr. Donnelly was one of the first to locate on this broad prairie, where he purchased one hundred and seventy-four acres of good arable land, which was entirely unimproved. At first he built a small house for his family and started work in earnest to open up his farm. By years of industry and perseverance he succeeded in his endeavor and made of his property on of the finest of the county. He was one of the honored pioneers of this section, and his death occurred October 9, 1892. His remains were interred in the Ashkum cemetery. His wife departed this life in May 1880, and her loss was deeply felt by her many friends. Mr. Donnelly is a man of upright character and integrity and is held in the highest esteem by all who have had the good fortune to come in contact with him either in a social or business way. Charles Donnelly is the elder of two brothers. Frank is married and lives in Chicago, where he is a contractor and builder. Our subject passed his boyhood days in the usual manner of farmer lads and had good school advantages, supplementing his course in the district schools by several terms' attendance at the Chicago High School. After completing his studies he learned the carpenter's trade in that city, and soon after went into the service of the Chicago Fire Department. He remained with the fire company for about twelve years, trying heroically, as did all in the service, to extinguish flames and save property in the great fire of 1871 and also in that of 1874. On the 24th of December, 1873, Mr. Donnelly was united in marriage in Chicago to Miss Jennie Simpson, who was bron in Canada and was reared and educated in Chicago. Her father, James Simpson, was a native of England. By her marriage, Mrs. Donnelly has become the mother of six children, three sons and three daughters: Robert, Charles, Frank, Agnes, Elizabeth and Sarah. These children are all receiving good education and advantages. In 1883, Mr. Donnelly returned to this county and took charge of the farm and business, buying out his brother's interest in the homestead. He has greatly improved the property, built a comodious barn and has done considerable tiling (sic). This is considered to be a most valuable piece of farm land, and is situated about half way between Clifton and Ashkum. Since becoming a voter, Mr. Donnelly has given his support to the Republican party, his first ballot being cast for Gen. U.S. Grant. He has never been an office-seeker in any sense of the term, but has always given his entire attention to his business affairs. Public schools and other institutions of learning, as well as all measures for the advancement of the people both intellectually, socially and morally, find in him a staunch friend and supporter. Mrs. Donnelly is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Clifton. Socially, he holds membership with the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Knight Templar Order. He is a member of the Hesperia Lodge No. 411, and Chicago Commandery No. 19, K.T., of Chicago. He is widely and favorably known throughout this section, and is held in high regard for his many qualities of worth. He is a man of varied reading and extensive information, and keeps well posted on all subjects of national and general importance. BIBLE RECORD OF ROBERT J.
