O'Donnell to Donnell Montague Co TX

I am helping my daughter-in-law research her family tree. Her oral family history indicates her family name of Donnell was originally O'Donnell but we cannot document such a change. The oral history indicates her family has roots in Montague Co, TX. We have verified the linage back thru Daniel Washington Donnell (b 1843; d 1919 in Saint Jo, Montague Co, Tx. The line then "seems" to extend back thru Ruben Donnell to John Donnell Jr to John Sr. Her family questions the line above Daniel. We would appreciate any help regarding the O'Donnell conversion and any dates and names that might be involved. Thanks!!

Ray
