Sampson/Donelson/Gwin
I am trying to sort out my family's connection with the Sampson/Donelson families. I am descended from the Rev. James Gwin.
His son, William McKendree Gwin first married Carolyn (or Caroline?) M. Sampson 23 Dec 1828, Davidson Co., TN, Jacob D. Donelson, Bondsman. William McKendree Gwin was admitted to the TN Bar but decided not to practice. He received a medical degree from Transylvania U. @1828. He briefly served as personal secretary to Pres. Andrew Jackson during the time that A. J. Donelson's wife was ill. He then located at Clinton, Hinds Co., Mississippi, where he practiced medicine and where his wife died. His wife's obit 14 Oct 1833 read: Caroline M. J. Sampson. For some reason I think that the M. J. stood for Matilda Johnson but I can't find the source of that now.
It looks like Caroline Sampson Gwin's sisters (or other relationship) married the following:
Elizabeth R. Sampson m. Ira Bradford, 10-23-1813, George R. Sampson, bondsman.
Mary H. Sampson m. Severn Donelson, 1-5-1821, Andrew J. Donelson, bondsman.
Narcissa M. Sampson m. William Hope, 7-12-1825, John O. Wharton, bondsman.
Agnes P. Sampson m. Jacob D. Donelson, 10-3-1825, Henry Ewing & John C. McLemore, bondsmen.
I have reason to believe that in Hinds Co., Mississippi, Elizabeth (Samspon) & Ira Bradford died @ the time of Caroline (Sampson) Gwin as well as William Hope leaving his widow, Narcissa Sampson Hope.
I would be interested in any Sampson information that you might have and would be glad to try to answer any questions you might have about the Gwins.
