I am searching for any information on the Olivo and Mendez families from Gurabo Al Medio, Santiago, Dominican Republic. The local church in the area is San Bartolome. Unfortunately any information on these families that would have been found in that church, may have been lost in a fire years ago. In any event, this is what I have so far: My grandmother's name was Rafaela Olivo and I believe her parent's (or grandparent's) names were Manuel and Sebastiana Olivo. Rafaela had a sister known to everyone as Lica (possibly short for Isabel). Rafaela died in the summer of 1935, leaving behind 6 children Lucas (Luquita), Rafael (Fandi), Benigno, Doris (my mother), Rosa Nelys & Bievenida. My grandfather's name was Santiago (Chago) Mendez. I don't know when he was born but I do know that he died in the Spring/Summer of 1982. Santiago's siblings were: Maria Consuelo Mendez vda. Urena, Isabel (Belica) Mendez vda. Rodriguez, Popo (nickname; not sure of given name) & Angelica. Up until the middle of the last century, my grandfather's sisters' trade was making sandals. My grandfather's parents names were Natividad (Mama Chichi) Pena and Alfonso Mendez Diaz. According to family stories, Alfonso Mendez served in the Island's militia under the Bolo party (or was it the Rabuces, I can't remember which - any information on the Bolo/Rabuces is appreciated). At one point, Alfonso was captured and served time in Dajabon (frontier between Haiti and D.R.). My grandfather's grandparents names were Jose Joaquin Mendez and Isabel Diaz. Isabel Diaz help build the Church of San Bartolome in Gurabo and is a descendant of Isabel Siant Diaz of Jamaica by way of England. Any information you have, would be greatly appreciated.
