I am researching the link between the Bermudez’ of Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic and Spain. I have documented my Bermudez lineage in Puerto Rico back to 1749 in Utuado, Puerto Rico. According to the historian Fernando Pico this branch of Bermudez came from Coamo. I have found Bermudez’ in the Coamo Parrish records dating back to 1716 but I have yet to make the Utuado/Coamo connection. If anybody is researching the Bermudez’ from Coamo, Utuado or Puerto Rico and can offer some assistance please send me an email: utuadofamilies@yahoo.com The following is a link to 2 documents containing baptismal records for the 2 earliest Bermudez’ I have found in Puerto Rico from 1716 and 1721. The parents for both are Geronimo Bermudez and a Juana (Tirado/Lugo ?). Geronimo must have been born in the late 1600’s, place is unknown. http://www.geocities.com/jbermudez32/genealogy.html According to other historians (notably - Jalil Sued Badillo: El Dorado Borincano & Alicia B. Gould: Nueva lista Documentada de los Tripulantes de Colon) Juan and Diego Bermudez, mariners who accompanied Christopher Columbus, spent a lot of time between the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and their home, Spain. Alice B. Gould alludes to the possibility of Diego settling in DR. It is very likely these 2 brothers settled in the Dominican Republic and are ancestors to the Bermudez' of DR and whose descendants may have migrated to Puerto Rico in the 1600s. I have also read that Juan Bermudez named Bermuda in honor of his ancestors the Bermudo Kings of Spain. If anyone else is researching the Bermudez brothers Diego and Juan and can offer some assistance please send me an email: utuadofamilies@yahoo.com Thank you, Joel Bermudez Mercado Notify Administrator about this message?
