David Doig was born in 1828 in Cupar, Fife, son of William Doig and Anne McIntosh.
In 1851 David was a farm servant at Drumcairn, Abernethy, Perthshire, on the 270 acre farm of John Chapman.
David married Jane Melville Cochrane on 31 May 1856 at West Pilmore, Longforgan, Perthshire. This marriage was after banns, according to the forms of the Presbyterian Church; witnesses were Thomas Young and James Cochrane. Jane, also known as Jean, was christened 4 Dec 1831 in Errol, Perthshire, the daughter of James Cochrane, farm servant, and Janet Forsyth; her parents were married 30 Apr 1831 in Liff, Benvie & Invergowrie.
At the time of his marriage in 1856, David resided at Omachie, Monifieth, Angus. In 1881 David was a "late farm servant" living in Monifieth, Angus; at home with David and Jane were Alexander, an apprentice baker, and John, a scholar. In 1891 David was a publican, or innkeeper, at the Plough Inn, Dairsie, Fife; at home with David and Jane were Annie and a grandson William Doig (illegitimate son of their son William Doig). [The Plough Inn may be the present Dairsie Hotel.]
David and Jean were large, and he was a champion caber thrower. Jean was a shot-putter.
David died 6 Nov 1911 in Cupar and was buried in the Dairsie Cemetery. An extract of his testament reads: David Doig, retired Vintner, Golf Inn, Cupar, died 6 November 1911, at Cupar, testate. Confirmation granted at Cupar, 24 January 1912, to Annie Easson Keil Doig, Golf Inn, Cupar, his daughter, and Robert Osborne Pagan, W. S. there, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 1 October 1909, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Fife, 11 January 1912. Value of Estate, £796, 2s. 1d.
