DOHM/DOHMS ?

Here is some material I've found, edited and will pass along.

I am a Canadian descendant of the DOMS family. The DOMS name was at times changed to Dohms or Domes by the Canadian immigration people, as the new immigrants entered the country, often unable to read or write and thus “defend” their name. As they were processed at the border and would tell the immigration officers their names, who would then issue papers similar to what the name sounded like. They are however all quite traceable to the Doms who moved from Volynia. In our family's case, even the brothers came across from Volynia at different times and ended up with different spellings. Here is some material I've found, edited and will pass along.

My great, great grandfather was Ludwik Doms (born 1829 at Chodecz, Poland. His wife was Ernestyny Hein, and records show their children were August/Karolina/Ludwik/Wilhelm/and Gustav. Amoung other places they lived in Volynia, the last was in the village of Dombrufka. Three of the Doms brothers came to Canada all at separate times. First Wilhelm, then Gustav and finally Ludwig. Ludwig settled in the Fenwood (Mellville), Saskatchewan area. Of the three brothers, he (Ludwig) is my “lineage”.

The name change I referred to above is actually helpful when trying to figure out who belongs to which line or “clan”.

1.       THE FENWOOD, SASKATCHEWAN CLAN (LUDWIG DOHMS):
2.       THE YELLOW GRASS, SASKATCHEWAN CLAN (WILHELM DOMES)
3.       THE LANG, CLAN (GUSTAV CLAN)
4.       Note: (There exists the possibility that there is a link with the Biggar, Saskatchewan Clan of Ludwig Domes as well)

My great grandfather was Ludwig Dohms (born Nov.25, 1859 at Bearyn, Chodecz, Poland - notice the apparent different spelling of Ludwig/Ludwik). Ludwig was born 60 miles west of Warsaw, Poland. When Ludwig was very young, the family moved southeast to Volynia, which was in Russia at that time. Volynia at times was also Polish territory. Ludwig married Rosalia Metzger and records show their children were John/Ferdinand/Amelia/Olga/Bertha/Rudolf/Gustav and Blondina. All the children were born in Volynia, Russia prior to coming to Canada. When Ludwig came to Canada

My grandfather was Rudolf Dohms of the FENWOOD CLAN, (born August 31, 1895 at Lutzk, Volynia, Russia). He (Rudolf) came to Canada when he was a child and farmed with his parent's in Saskatchewan, Canada in the Fenwood (Mellville), Saskatchewan area. Rudolf married Martha Schmidt on December 1, 1916 in Lemberg, Saskatchewan and they had nine children. ELEANOR, ARNOLD, ALBERT, LOUISE, ALMA, VIOLET, WALTER, DORIS and MAVIS.

My mother was Rudolf’s daughter, ALMA. She married Fred HOWSON, of Essex, (Gesto) Ontario.

There is a hardcover book that was published some 25 years or so ago on the Dohms/Doms/Domes people by Norquay Printers Ltd., of Portage la Prarie, Manitoba. The title of it was “A CENTURY OF DOMS HISTORY IN WESTERN CANADA”. Perhaps you could do some phoning around etc., if you feel like trying to get a copy. I have enjoyed it and have gleaned much of my info from it.

I was born August 11, 1957 and now live in the Toronto, Ontario area. Where do you live? Can ANY of you send me any geneology material? If so, Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Mark Howson
