Hi Barbara,

Yes, the Doherty name is so common, and very hard to trace. My John Doherty (great-great grandfather) was born around 1842 in Ireland, and settled in Lawrence, MA. My earliest record is of his marriage in 1863 to Hannah Leary in Lawrence,MA.

I know his father was Patrick Doherty and mother was Mary, but again, these names are so common, so I have no records of them.

I suspect my Doherty's are from Cork (passed down information), but I'm not certain.

I 99% verified that the John Doherty in the 26th was actually not my guy. I ordered his military records and the John Doherty in the 26th was born in NY, but signed up in Lawrence, MA.

Good luck with your searching.

Joe
