Ann, b. ca. 1700, Lanc., VA to Rich and Eliz (Bushrod) D.; who did she marry?
Richard Doggett, son of the Reverend Benjamin Doggett, married Elizabeth Bushrod in Lancaster County, Virginia and had several children. He wrote his Last Will in 1721 and mentioned wife Elizabeth, sons Bushrod and George, daughter Ann, and "other" children. Many researchers recognize that one of these "other" children was an Apphia Doggett (named for her maternal grandmother, Apphia (Hughes) Bushrod).
George Doggett married Ann Chattin (or Chatwin) and in 1736, purchsed land in Spotsylvania County (according to Spotsylvania Deed Book).George later resided in the part of Orange County which, in 1748-49 was formed into Culpeper County. In 1758 he wrote his Will, which was probated in Culpeper.
Bushrod Doggett also moved West from Lancaster County, and eventually resided in Culpeper County (probably the Northern part, close to Fauquier County).
My question concerns Ann Doggett, their sister.I have searched the Latter Day Saints database (www.familysearch.org) and the trees submitted to World Connect (www.rootsweb.com), as well as an excellent Doggett family website (http://www.doggettfam.org/contents.htm), but have not found anyone who states the name of the spouse of Ann Doggett (although one researcher erroneously reports she married George Reeves, but this was actually her first cousin, also Ann Doggett, but daughter of Richard Doggett's brother, Benjamin Doggett (jr.)).Thus, it appears that this Ann Doggett’s spouse (if any) has not yet been identified. While it is possible that she died soon after 1721, while still single, or remained single into later life, the most likely scenario is that she married while in her 20s.The Doggett family site (above) even speculates she might have married before 1721.
My THEORY is that Ann Doggett, born about 1700, married about 1722 James Thornton of neighboring Richmond County, VA. In approximately 1724, James and Ann had a daughter, who they named Apphia Thornton (possibly after Ann’s sister, Apphia (Doggett) Boatman, or possibly after Ann’s maternal grandmother, Apphia (Hughes) Bushrod).James and Ann Thornton moved West, to Orange County. VA in or about 1741 (when James leased land from Alexander Spotswood).
This Apphia Thornton, born about 1724, married John Foushee and lived in Culpeper County (where she appears, with her name mistakenly transcribed from the old handwritten script as "Abifire") in the 1783 tax list, along with her son Thornton "Fushee".
Does anyone have any other explanation for the name of Apphia (Thornton) Foushee? Does anyone have any information on the spouse of Ann Doggett from Lancaster County, VA?Please contact me directly at [email protected].
