I think the reason that finding names like Williams, and William is so dificult is because it was a made up name.
My ancestors whom were Cherokee Indian had to change whatever his name was because he became a lawyer and at that time - The U.S didn't allow Indians to be lawyers.

Also, If you break down William you get
i am ill W.
Now M's and W's look the same...
Somehow one got turned upside down.
