Joseph came to Iowa prior to 1860. He and his wife Nancy E. DeWitt are listed in the 1860 Federal Census. He had three children, Eugene, Frank, (my grandfather) and DeWitt Clinton (called Clint). The 1860 census lists Joseph as E. J. Doe, born in New Hampshire, his birth date was 1834. Nancy DeWitt, listed as Ellen N. DeWitt was born in Indiana, in 1834.

I believe Joseph descends from Nicholas through the Sampson line but have not been able to verify as yet. This is based on information received from Ms. Thurber in Maine.
