Stephen SANDS, b 1761-Loyalist-I think he's the grandson in Jeremiah's 1774 Will
I think my gggg grandfather, Stephen SANDS, is the grandson mentioned in Jeremiah DODGE's 1774 Will:
In the year of our Lord Christ 1774, the 31 day of March, I, Jeremiah Dodge, of Cow Neck, in Queens County, do make this my last Will. All debts to be paid by my executors.I leave to my wife Elizabeth my best bed and furniture in my house, and all her wearing apparell, and all effects she had from her brother Robert Sutton's estate, and one-half of my movable estate upon condition that she stands to the will.I leave to my daughter, Phebe Underhill, 1/2 of my movable estate on condition that Samuel Underhill first pays to my estate oe5 which he oweth to me.And that oe5 is to be paid to my grandson, Stephen Sands, when of age.I leave the rest of my movable estate to my daughter, Mary Davenport, to be kept by my executors and paid to her as they think she wants. My farm is to be sold by my executors. My three sons, Jeremiah, William, and Robert, are to pay to their mother oe3 each yearly.I leave to my son Jeremiah my wearing apparell and 1/3 of the money from the sale of my farm. And he is to pay the bonds I am bound for him.My son Jeremiah is to have 20 shillings for his heirship.I leave to my son William 1/3 of the money from sale of farm, and he is to pay to the rest of his brothers oe2 10s. for value he had received.I leave to my son Robert 1/3.I make my trusty friends, Thomas Dodge, Petrus Onderdonk, and Adam Mott, Jr., executors.

1.Stephen Sands, the Loyalist/Queen's Ranger, was born about 1761 according to the British Archives website. This means he was 13-years-old when the Will was written. He was the right age to be the grandson.
2.William Underhill, the brother of Phebe's husband Samuel, was a captain in the Queen's Rangers."Wm. Underhill stated before the Commission that before the revolution he and his family lived at Philipsburg, Westchester Co., NY and that he joined the British Army as soon as they landed on Long Island. He served for nine months as a captain in the Queens Rangers and in that time recruited 162 men. . ."

I am guessing that my gggg grandfather, Stephen Sands, was recruited by William, his uncle's brother.
3.It is interesting to note that Jeremiah Dodge's Will was proved May 11, 1780.Stephen's military service began in 1776 according to the British Archives website, but the first muster roll known of that includes his name is dated June 1780 to August 1780 and includes the notation "Joined Jul**returned from desertion".I wonder if Stephen was away from his regiment because of Jeremiah's death. The regiment was in New Jersey while Stephen was away, and then headed to South Carolina. On 19 October 1781, Stephen was taken prisoner at the battle of Yorktown, Virginia.
4.I don't know where Samuel and Phebe Dodge Underhill lived.I am wondering if Stephen lived with them.I will be researching the Underhills and Dodges to see what documentation I can find.According to the British Archives website, Stephen was born in Connecticut.I believe the Philips land (Philipsburg Manor)--the land William farmed--was in The Oblong, the boundary area between New York and Connecticut that was disputed for many years.I have yet to find any SANDS information in Connecticut sources.
