Making the list
Doddridge Chapel and Cemetery added to state and national historical registers

Two years ago, three volunteers filled out an application. They had two goals in mind for Doddridge Chapel and Cemetery. And both were achieved.

"We wanted it to be on the state historical register and ultimately on the national one," said Paul Hedges of Centerville. "It was recognized by both in 22 months."

The site, located southwest of Centerville, was placed on the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures earlier this year and entered in the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 28.

Hedges, along with Janet Trachtenberg and Jon Morgan, put a good amount of work into the application.

"It was quite a lengthy form," he said. "There were many restrictions, and it was really specific."

Hedges said the application was rejected twice before approval.

"It had room for three rejections," he said. "So I wasn't surprised."

The National Register recognizes the site's significance and provides for its protection. Owners of the property are eligible to apply for federal grants for restorations or preservation work and tax benefits for certified rehabilitation work.

"Certain things are done to keep its historical integrity," Hedges said. "I think that the biggest advantage is simply its protection."

The first church on the site was built in 1814 and made brick in 1837. It was replaced by the present church in 1876.

According to Hedges, the site's future is in the hands of young people.

"Most of the older families from this area are gone," he said. "It is up to the young ones to continue its care."

Hedges said Doddridge rents its facilities and is looking for a new occupant.

"It's better off when somebody is using it rather than sitting there idle," he said.
