Hi Dave, LDS stands for Latter Day Saints; Those who follow the Mormon faith. If you would to know more about the Church go to www.familydearch.org. There is an explanation of the beliefs on line at that address. I am not a member of the church myself so cannot answer any questions other than those related to the work they have done on genealogy. It is my understanding that the LDS pioneered the computer program or "gedcom" which most of use today. They have collected, copied and preserved birth, marriage and death records from around the world and made them available to anyone who travels to a Family History Center or visits the website. The IGI (International Genealogical Index) is a truly wonderful database of these records. This is located on the web site. Also the ancestor files can be a great help in locating research already completed. I would advise howeever double checking the original source and following up the leads you find on the site. None of the ancestor files list a source for the information. The main library is located in Salt Lake city with a number of Family history Centers or FHCs around the US and the rest of the world. The locations of the FHCs are listed on the web site. Most of these can rent microfilm/fiche for a researcher from the Family History Catalog. It searchable by computer at the FHC. Many of the texts or documaent listed are rare or limited editions of genealogical works and historial manuscripts. It is a great service to the researcher. It has been close to a tear since I ordered anything so I cannot tell you what the rate for renting the films would be or how long you can rent them for at this time. The last time I ordered any the fee was $4.50 for a 6 week rental. Not a lot for what you get. Oh my, did I just write all that! Please do try to visit a Family History Center and see what a wnderful job they have done preserving our heritage. Don't forget to sya thanks for a job well done, I garantee you will get a beaming smile from a tireless volunteer. Hope this answer your question. Jo
