Hi Ed,I don't have a lot of information about Benjamin, but I'll be happy to give you what I've got...
Benjamin seems to have been the middle son of John and Jane (not Mary) Dockum.Jane was the widow of John Bickford. As far as I know, no one has been able to track down her maiden name.I have even tried to do some research on the Bickford family, but have been unable to find a maiden name in that family's history, either.I believe that Benjamin is the middle son because the names are always given as John, Jr., Benjamin and Jonathan.
The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 24 (1870), page 13, has an article entitled "Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Portsmouth, N.H. from 1706 to 1742" that lists "Benjn: Dockum and Sarah Preston both of Portsmo wr marryd 28 Dec: 1719".Vol. 81 (1927), page 424 gives "Records of the South Church of Portsmouth, N.H.".On page 424 it lists as being baptised by Rev. John Emerson:"Dockum, Benjamin, son of Benjamin and Sarah, Dec. 16, 1722.Benjamin, son of Benjamin and Sarah, Mar. 31, 1728.Sarah, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah, Aug. 17, 1729.William, son of Benjamin and Sarah, Jan. 2, 1725/6".Also on page 424 it shows as being a church admission "Sarah, received July 5, 1722".On page 441 it lists asbeing baptized by Rev. William Shurtleff:"Dockum, Joshua, son of Benjamin, Sept. 12, 1736.Mary, daughter of Benjamin, Apr. 20, 1735.Olive, daughter of Benjamin, Mar. 26, 1737/8.Samuel, son of Benjamin, Apr. 15, 1739."
From Vol. 32, Page 104 of the New Hampshire Province Deeds:On 19 Feb 1744/5, a John Preston sold Benjamin Dockum one half of his house and garden "for the sum of fifty pounds lawfull money".There is no statement in the deed what specific relation John Preston is to Sarah, but he must have been a close relative.
"The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" by Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby and Walter Goodwin Davis, page 197, says that "A son Samuel m. Sarah, sis. of Susannah Martin, heirs of Clark's or Noler's Isl."
In the index for the New Hampshire Province Deeds, on June 18, 1764, Samuel & Sarah Dockum and Stephen & Mary Sumner, all of Portsmouth, sold "an island with buildings lying in Piscatagua river near Little Harbour" to Nathaniel Adams. On Sept. 20, 1765, Samuel & Sarah (wife) Dockum and Stephen & Mary Sumner, all of Portsmouth, for "Susanna Martin, singlewoman, dec'd sister", sold to Nathaniel Adams "Susanna Martin's share in Clarkes or Noler's Island, near Little Harbour".
According to the index for the New Hampshire Province Deeds, on Apr. 17, 1767, Benjamin and Sarah Dockum of Portsmouth, sold to Samuel Dockum, also of Portsmouth, land in Barrington. Then on Apr. 20, 1767, Samuel and Sarah Dockum sold land in Barrington to Joseph Allcock.
This is all the information that I have on Benjamin and his descendants. If you find any other information taking Benjamin's line on down I would appreciate you letting me know what you find.Sorry that I can't be of more help.
Happy hunting!
Julia Hann
