Hello,
The 1930 census will be released in 2002. The staff at my genealogy library has emphasized the Census is released every 72 years!
Currently the U.S. census from 1790-1920 (except 1890 which burned) are all available.
First, contact as many living relatives to put together family groups to identify siblings, cousins, and include spouse names, parents, location for marriage, dates, birth places, death location.Don't forget to check your local newspaper for old and new obituaries of family names.Funeral homes usually will provide a copy of the death certificate which gives name, cause of death, age, height, hair/eye color, place of death and burial location.
Second, go to a library with genealogy materials that hopefully has census on microfilms, county records for area you and ancestor lived. Census will show, Head of household, age, Birthplace, occupation, schooling, members in house. After 1870 census, records showed number of births and number of children living/dead, number of years spouses married.
Third, also check for military service. Wars have been fought from time of Revolutionary War through Gulf War.Start with Gulf War, Viet Nam, Korean War, World War I & II, Spanish American, Civil War, Mexican War, French & Indian Wars etc.Department of Defense DD-214's shows name, birthplace, age, rank, home of record, place where entered service, unit(s), military training dates, and medals and length of service. This is good information for those born after 1930 census and for all who have served.
Internet has several good search engines (Rootsweb, USGENWEB, STATE-GENWEB, Genforum, GenConnect, GenSeeker, GenHelper etc.) but the majority of information will probably come from your own geographic region in cemeteries, church records for births, christianings, marriages, county records for marriages and divorces, land sales, Wills and Administration and Court events for property sales/exchanges, and tax auctions.
Better libraries have census indices which lists census individuals. It will give:
Date of Census, Town's name, County name, Enumerator's name, date of census date, Family Name, Gender, Birthplace, Town, Microfilm Series and PAGE NUMBER on film.
Most people from Missouri came from Kentucky and Tennessee areas.Your 1920 census will give birthplaces for your family lines!
BEST HINT: The 1880 census has been transcribed to a Soundex/code number to deciphering family names, i.e, G-125=Gibson.
Find Dobyns on soundex and look at 1880 Soundex for immediate results for household members.
Hope this gives you the start you are looking for!Happy Hunting!
