Hi Jo,
Great find on that reference to Catherine as Henry’s widow!I’m now even more convinced we have the right family.I agree with you that the Henry Dobson in Madison County is some other Dobsons, not our family.
I think what happened with this branch is that Henry Baker Dobson and most of his children left North Carolina around 1828, give or take a year or so and went to Indiana and settled in Morgan and Marion Counties among lots of their friends and former neighbors. There was a big exodus of people from around Dobson’s Cross Roads who went to Indiana about that time.(However, my branch of the family, Henry’s brother William P. Dobson, stayed in North Carolina.)I think in Morgan County in the 1830 census the Elizabeth and Henry are probably the widow and son Henry Jr. and that son Franklin was probably living there with them.I recall seeing it stated somewhere that Franklin Dobson married Violet King in Morgan County.
Since we know Franklin Dobson according to his descendants was the son of Henry Baker Dobson, if we can tie your Henry Dobson to Franklin Dobson in Morgan County, and then track Henry Dobson from Morgan County to Indianapolis and to widow Catherine through deeds and estate records, then even without DNA evidence, I think we will be able to get to where we want to be.Not to discourage looking on the internet, but I have a feeling the relevant records are sitting in the courthouses in Morgan and Marion counties or maybe somewhere in the Indiana State Archives and are not on the internet.
There is an interesting write-up on Franklin that someone posted on findagrave.com: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=31179428http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=31179428I don’t agree with all of it.They don’t have Henry Jr. listed among Henry Baker Dobson’s children.I think someone made just a wild guess as to the maiden name of Henry Baker Dobson’s wife. Also, I keep seeing Franklin’s brother referred to as William “Henry” Dobson but I think they have confused the William Dobson who was the son of Henry Baker Dobson with another man named William Henry Dobson who made some land transactions in southeast Indiana in the same time period and who was not a part of our Dobsons.
Also, even though your branch doesn’t have male-line descendants maybe William H. Dobson’s brother Joseph W. the engineer has male-line descendants living today?
Wishing you and everyone a great Christmas and a happy New Year!
