He had a brother Henry, born Feb. 26, 1817 in Durham, England who was married to 1. Jane Kipling and 2. Jane Brownell. Both Henry and Frederick emigrated to the U.S. date unknown. There were 8 children in the family. The parents were John Dobson and Emma Gaskin (Gasciogne). English records say John was a miner from Frosterly, England.
