This came over a mailing list - thought it might straighten out some things. entry from "Abstract of Pensions of the Revolution, War of 1812 and All Wars Prior to 1883 of Claiborne County, Tennessee" compiled by Annie Walker Burns. Also, pages 129-144 are E. Tennessee bios not of the pension paper. The papers are typed as they appear on the pages, including mispellings. ======================================== Dobbs, Chesley & Hannah Dobbs Pg. 35-37 Section 31 Chesley Dobbs age 84 applied 1833 in Claiborne County, Tennessee,states in 1776 he resided in culpepper County, Virginia and was drafted for three months tour of duty under Capt. Tut which was attached to Col. Edward Stephens and they marched various places in VA., on scouting parties and was discharged and returned home, while still residing in Culpepper Co., VA., fall 1779 was commanded by same officers and was called a minute man. Served from 1776 to fall of 1779 nine months; that he then moved to North Carolina and settled in Burk County, then volunteered under Capt. Dobson under Col. Lock and marched to Ramsours Mills and June 10-1780 fought the Battle of said Mills in which we had a victory over Tories and in same day in the evening we joined Brigade of Gen. Rutherford and he discharged all of us volunteers and this applicant then returned home after serving ten days. Then some time in August that he was taken prisoner by the Tories while on his plantation and was paroled by colo husbands one of the Tory Coloneals and remained under that paroll until a few days before the battle of Kings Mountain Battle, states he was then run by Col. Cleveland and he discharged him, stating that if I weas again taken prisoner that the enemy would hang or shoot me when they found me without I was exchanged according to the rules of war and so I remained a prisoner until the end of the war. Section 35 Affidavits as to his character were Rice W. Whitaker, a clergyman of the Baptist Church and a citizen of Claiborne County, Tenn, states he is well acquainted with Chesley Dobbs, for over twenty years, and believe his statements are true. --Applicant Hannah Dobbs of Claiborne County, Tenn 1838, widow of Chesley Dobbs decd, age 84, states his married Chesley Dobbs 1794 before first of January, that they had lived in Claiborne County twenty two years prior to his death, and prior thereto in Burk County, N.C. For a number of years, and born and raised in Culpepper County, VA. and died 1-25-1834 in Claiborne County, Tenn, states she does not know where to apply to secure her marriage record as they married in a church in Fauguire County, VA., and has no was of ascerting where the parish register was carried, as the bans of marriage was published, but by the testimony of witnesses hereunto annexed, and the last will and testament of her deceased husband. A copy of which is hereunto annexed the pension agent books at Knoxville showing that she drew money due from 9-4-1833 to 1-24-1834. --Affidavit of Mary England and Wm. Marcum of Claiborne County, Tenn 1833. --Wm. Marcum states he is 40 years of age and has been acquainted with Chesley Dobbs, decd and Hannah Dobbs his widow a great number of years and knows she is same Hannah Dobbs named in last will of Chesley Dobbs decd., states they had always lived in the same house together and same house he left her, as he himself had lived in house with them for the last fifteen years. Mary England states she is about age 56, and well acquainted with Chesley Dobbs and his wife Hannah for from time of her first remembered which was about 1788 or 1789. --To the best of her recorllection marriage of Chesley and Hannah took place prior to 1794 and Hannah ia identical Hannah Dobbs named in will of her husband Chesley Dobbs. -- The following is a copy of the will of Chesley Dobbs: In the name of God Amen: I chesley Dobbs of the county of Claiborne and state of Tennessee being of sound and memory but sick and weak of body do make this my last will and testament as follows. I leave for the support of my beloved wife Hannah Dobbs, during her natural life the use and profits of my farm, mill and personal estate a schedule of which is here annexed and it is my will and desire that the said mill and personal estate be continued under the direction and care of William Marcum so long as my said wife Hannah may live. Proveded the said William makes and provides for her a suitable maintenance so that she may be reasonably satisfied and not waist nor destroy any of the personal property committed to their care but to return it in like kind as when taken possession of. It is further my will and desire that at the decease of my wife Hannah my real and personal property be advertised and sold on a credit by my executor hereinafter to be annexed, my real estate on a credit and third payable to twelve months and third payable in two years and one third payable in three years. The personal property to be sold on a year credit, the purchasers giving bond and security for all sums over three dollars, three dollars and under payable in ready money. It is my will that all my just debts be paid as soon as my debts can be collected. It is lifewise my will and desire that as soon as convenient my executor give my daughter Lucy one cow to make her equal with my other daughters in addition to her equal share. Section 33 It is my will and desire that a horse purchased of me sometime ago by my son Caleb Dobbs for which he was to execute his note to me for sixty dollars and which he failed to pay or execute his note is to be charged to the said Caleb Dobbs as part of his share. It is my will and desire that with the above reserves the balance of my estate be equally divided amongst my children share and share alike. A schedule of the real estate and personal property of Chesley Dobbs, decd., 90 acres of land and mill held by deed of conveyance, one cow and calf and heifer yearling and one sow and pigg, -two feather beds steads and furniture, a 3 gallon pot and common size oven and skillet, a pewter earthendish. It is my will and desire that Wm. Graham, be my executor, to carry this my last will and testament into effect, revoking all or any other will or wills in testimony whereof - I have hereunto subscribed my name by affixing my mark. This June 9, 1827. Signed Chesley (my X mark) Dobbs. Peter Marcum, Archibald Cooper Affidavit of Benj. F. Cloud, the clerk in 1834, states Benjamin Sewell and Daniel Marcum came into court and proved that Hannah Dobbs of Claiborne Co., is the widow of Chesley Dobbs, decd, and that Chesley Dobbs died Jan. 5, 1834. -- Affidavit of John Dobbs of McMinn County, Tennessee, states 1839, that Hannah Dobbs of Claiborne County, Tenn is a widow of Chesley Dobbs of Claiborne Co., decd, and that he is well acquainted with Chesley and Hannah Dobbs and has in his possession the only register that was ever kept of ages of the children. He states he is now age 59 the eighth of May next, and has been acquainted with them from his birth almost until the present or until he moved to this county, (meaning McMinn Co., Tenn) which is about 100 miles from Claiborne Co. The family records are as follows: John Dobbs son of Chesley Dobbs and wife Hannah Dobbs born 5-8-1780; Mary Dobbs dau. of said born 12-6-1781; Lucy Dobbs dau. of said born 9-7-1783; Rheubin Dobbs son of said born 5-28-1785; Mayson Dobbs son of said born 6-16-1787; James Dobbs son of said born 2-23-1789; Joel Dobbs son of said 2-22-1791; Phebe Morre Dobbs dau. of said 10-16-1793; Caleb Dobbs son of said 6-6-1795; Joshua Dobbs son of said born 8-24-1799; (Following are grand children of Chesley & Hannah interlined) Levina Dobbs dau. of Lucey Dobbs born 6-1-1809; Belinda daughter of Phebe Dobbs born 6-4-1813; Elvina Dobbs dau. of James Dobbs born 7-30-1812; Cyntha Oaks? (illegible name) wife of John Dobbs born 11-24-1787. It is stated by A. G. Graham, Jonesboro, Tenn 1853, that the widow had died 1840 or 41, that Lucy Dobbs a child of theirs is still living.
