Arthur Dobbs of "Fort Dobbs"

I just found this forum and hope I can get some direction, please. My great-grandfather was Charles Dobbs. I think he was from Kentucky. He ran for president in the early part of the century for the Socialist Party. When he died, our family inherited a very old portrait of Arthur Dobbs, the colonial governor of North Carolina. I'm assuming that we are descendants. I would like to find out what happened between Arthur and Charles. Thanks for your guidance.
