Probably not an "error: in the spelling..In the past most people were not educated .It is not at all unusual to find a name spelled many different ways..The person doing the recording frequently spelled the name the way it sounded to them,and if the person giving the info spoke with a dialect that could have changed the sound. SO Dobbs could be spelled many different ways and still be the same family. Dobbs,Dobs ,Daubs , DabbsDaubs and so on.
