You might try contacting The Dobbin Inn in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.I learned from their proprietor several years ago that many of the male members of the Dobbin family were police officers and mayors of the town. I was also told that the name is of French origin (D'aubyn) and that a great deal of land was awarded to the family in County Antrim by Queen Elizabeth I for outstanding miltary service.
I would also recommend reading "Carolina Cradle."I can't remember the author's name, but the book gives a lot of information regarding the family's immigration to America in the 1700's.Fun facts include the family's influence over the establishment of the town of Salisbury, North Carolina and their founding father status of Thiatira Presbyterian Church also in Salisbury. The church is still in existence today and is wonderful to visit.
Hope this is helpful! My mother is a Dobbins
(the "S" was added somewhere along the way).
