James D; born 1751, married Catherine Pitman
This post is primarily about my ancestor - James Dobbins; born in Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1751; moved to Georgia around 1763; served in the Revolutionary War; married Catherine Pitman in May 1788 (or possibly August 22, 1790); and died on August 24, 1853 in Falmouth, Maine.
As far as I can tell, this is a genealogic dead end as I have been unable to trace back his ancestry any further.
Below are some tidbits of information and *speculations*.
=========================
HUGH Senior
Hugh Dobbin Senior, Born:1684 in Magerhany, Monaghan, Gentleman, Ireland(on the border of Northern Ireland, within Ulster Co but still part of the Irish Republic)
This Hugh had numerous sons who could have been the father of MY James:
1) Hugh Jr. DobbinM 1709 in Carrickfergus, Antrim... or... Armagh, Ireland
2) James DobbinsM 1712 in Armagh, Ireland(married Skiles)
3) Alexander DobbinsM 1715 in Armagh, Ireland
4) John DobbinM 1715 in Armagh, Ireland
5) Leonard DobbinM 1718 in Armagh, Ireland
6) Nathanael DobbinM 22 Jan 1730 in Armagh, Ireland
as well as 2 daughters:
7) Agnes DobbinF 30 Apr 1710 in Armagh, Ireland
8) Isabel DobbinF 19 May 1723 in Armagh, Ireland
(Armagh and Antrim are both in Northern Ireland -- In 1608, James I began the plantation of Ulster by bringing in English and Scottish settlers to replace "troublesome" native land owners. However, trouble broke out again in 1641 and it was not until the end of the Williamite wars that peace came back to Armagh.)

SUPPOSEDLY there were 14 children (according to a Genforum post made by a Jeff Dobbins = [email protected]) -- thus there are 2 unaccounted for children.
My James (who married Catherine Pitman) was born March 7 1751 and so cannot be a child of James Dobbins and Elizabeth Skiles (as Henry was born in January 1751).

SPECULATIONS:
When looking at the children of Hugh Dobbin senior, we see that a number of them were having children in the PA area in the 1740's.
Hugh Jr. Dobbin was married in PA 1737 and had children born in PA up until 1741.
James Dobbins and Elizabeth Skiles had children born in PA until 1749.
Alexander Dobbins had his son William born in PA in 1738.
These documented PA Dobbins may likely have been relatives (such as cousins?) of my James Dobbins.
I cannot find any info on the lines of three of Hugh Sr's children. Those being John, Leonard, and Nathanael. Considering that their brothers Hugh Jr, James, and Alexander all came to the USA and resided in PA between 1737 and at least 1749, it is quite likely that John, Leonard, and Nathanael all did likewise. Furthermore it is possible that one of these 3 brothers was the parent of MY James, thus making Hugh Senior the grandfather of MY James.
*IF* this is the case, it is also quite likely that the Dobbins family is of (lowland?) Scottish (or possibly English) descent due to having come from the area of the Ulster settlement. The name Dobbins is even listed on the 1607 - 1633, muster rolls for Antrim.
===================
There are also two additional 'John Dobbins'
John 1
Born: 1715 Chester, PA, USA
Died: 1761 Cape Fear, NC, USA
John 2, born about 1725, probably in Lancaster Co, Pa. and died in 1762 in Rowan Co, NC. He owned lands in Rowan Co before 1753 and was the constable on the south side of the Yadkin River in June 1753. He was probably the John who was hired by Major George Washington to guide a party to visit the French Commander in the Ohio Valley in 1753, and may have been the John with Capt Prestons Rangers in the Shenandoah Valley in 1755. He purchased 440 acres of land on the Forks of the Yadkin in 1762, apparently just before he died.
Plus one William Dobbins, born 1786 in Georgia. (James and his father moved to Georgia circa 1763)
