James Madison Dobbins (1816-1853), Montgomery/Floyd Co. VA
Seeking information on the life and family of James Madison DOBBINS b. 1816, son of Abner (Jr.) and Mary (Kirk) DOBBINS of southern Montgomery Co. VA.This may be the same James DOBBINS who m. 31 Dec 1837 to Jane LNU and was subsequently enum. 1840 age 20-30 with a wife 20-30 and a son 0-5.This is prob. the same James M. DOBBINS who was enum. 1850 age 28 [sic] with companion Ann WRIGHT age 25.James was called "Madison" in his father's 1844 will and was alive on 19 Jun 1847 when Abner's heirs executed a quit claim, but James d. bef. 18 Feb 1854 when a second quit claim was executed.Floyd Co. death records show that James DOBBINS, son of Abner and Mary, d. Dec 1853 at age 37.
I may well have conflated James Madison DOBBINS, son of Abner Jr., with one or both of two first cousins:
1.James b. abt. 1796, son of Thomas and Mary; or
2.James b. abt. 1802, son of John by an unknown first wife.
Abner Jr., Thomas and John are all sons of Abner (Sr.) and Elizabeth (Henley) DOBBINS of Montgomery Co. VA.Their lands lay along the Little River where Montgomery, Floyd and Pulaski counties come together.
I am particularly interested in identifying the son b. 1835-1840 who was enum. with James and Jane in the latter year.I believe he may be William DOBBINS, who from other sources was b. abt. 1832 and who m. 1 Oct 1853 in Montgomery to Chloe Ann LESTER.This couple was subsequently enum. in Childress (Montgomery), Alum Ridge (Floyd) and Indian Valley (Floyd). They gave their children the names Millard, Adeline, Catherine, Riley, James, Lewis, Virginia, Sherman, and Mary.
