Leroy Dobyns, Farnham, Richmond County, Virginia
Hi,
I'm looking for information on a Leroy Dobyns (may be spelled Dobbins) from Richmond County, Virginia. He was a slave-owner at the time of the War of 1812, and my great-great-great-great grandfather and uncle were two of his slaves. Their names were Carter and Absolem Croxen. I have found plenty of genealogical data on Leroy Dobyns, but nothing that helps to track Absolem and Carter. What I am looking for are records of slave sales/purchases, or information on his plantation. Is this information available anywhere?
I found Leroy Dobyns' name on a Claim for Slaves in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, and it lists Absolem as a carpenter worth $1000 and Carter with a value of $600. It also lists 29 other slaves. I have also attempted to research plantations/slave owners by the name of Croxen/Croxton, but to no avail.
My ancestors were living in Farnham Church, VA before they boarded a British ship for Nova Scotia in 1814. I am unsure whether Leroy Dobyns lived there, or if this is where they ran away to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
