Here I go.. kicking life into a long neglected thread!
This is something that drives me nuts. Getting very different answers.. was James Irish or Scottish? =lol=
I had the opportunity to speak with my 96 yo cousin the other week. She remembers her father, Halburton Dobbins (b. 6/11/1873) and states his family was English. As I tended to doubt this, I asked about church (knowing his wife was a good Irish Gavin) and was told.... that Halburton was not a Catholic. He supposedly went on Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving... but didn't take communion.
Now, I don't know if Halburton had lapsed, or if the family fell from Catholicism after arriving in the states... but it is hard to imagine a man of good Irish descent, passing up the holy communion.
Anyway... I still am no closer to knowing anything about Halburton... but I hope maybe someone out there has found out some new info in the past few years.
