Cao Doan was born in a very notable family in Chau Phong District. His father, Cao Nguyen, was a District Chief -- a very generous and patriotic person. Because Cao Nguyen refused to collect taxes from his people nor presented to To Dinh, a Chinese Governor, he was later killed by the Governor. Cao Doan was only 5 at the time. He and his mother had to wandered from one village to another and lived a very hard and poor life. They both later wandered to Bao Thap village. Here they were helped by a very distinguished man named Nguyen Cong Tin. His mother soon passed away, but Cao Doan continued to stay here. He was not only helped with foods and a place to stay, but also was helped to study literature and martial arts. Cao Doan grew up to be a very bright, energetic, and full of patriotism. Nguyen Cong Tin was very pleased that he decided to let Cao Doan married his youngest daughter named Nguyen Dao Nuong who was known for her beauty.

To Dinh, a very cruel Chinese Governor, forced Nguyen Cong Tin to let him married Dao Nuong as his mistress, but was refused. As a results, To Dinh ordered his men to kill Nguyen Cong Tin. Upon hearing this news, Cao Doan and his wife were furious. They were determined to fight the Chinese to save their country and people from slavery. Cao Doan wrote a proclamation of war against the China. Thousands of men and women joined their cause. They chose Bao Thap as their headquarter. At the same time, the Trung Sisters also wrote a proclamation of war against China in Me Linh District. Cao Doan was invited by Trung Nhi to join to forces. He gladly accepted and brought his army to join the Trung Sisters. He was put in charge of the Navy. In a very short time, he help the Trung Sisters defeated the Chinese that ended 150 years of Chinese's rule. Cao Doan was named Secretary of The Navy.

Three year later in 43 A.D., the China sent fresh forces to invade Vietnam again. Cao Doan and his wife again led their naval fleets into battle. However, they were so outnumbered that they could not hold Chinese's advance. However, they both continued to lead the battle long after the Trung Sisters committed suicide. They both led bloodiest battles against the Chinese. His wife later died in battle and he himself was badly injured. He managed to withdrew back to his home town, Bao Thap. Upon seeing him, villagers came out to welcome him. He told them to maintain their patriotism. Cao Doan passed away on July 20, 43 A.D. Villagers respected and revered for his generosity, courage, and patriotism, that they set up temples to venerate him and his wife.
