On the chance that someone will check back on this thread: I've just learned that my 2x great-grandmother is Elizabeth H. Rumer, nee Doan or Doane, of Jasper Twp., Fayette County, Ohio, born about 1840. I find her in the 1860 Census living as a single woman with a Jamina Rankin, age 28, and her daughter Rebecca Rankin, age 4. A little poking around revealed that Jamina V. Doan married William Rankin in Clinton County, Ohio, in 1853. He is apparently dead or otherwise out of the picture by 1860, because Jamina is listed as head of household and Elizabeth Doan, whom by working assumption I take to be her sister, is living under her roof. I'm tracking Jamina as a clue to who Elizabeth's parents might be. Was there more than one Jamina Doan in the Clinton-Fayette area in the 1830s-60s? Aunt and niece, maybe? Because the one I have couldn't be Joseph and Catherine's daughter, Joseph having died in 1825. (Incidentally, in the 1880 census Elizabeth said both her parents were born in North Carolina.) Thanks!
