The limited geneaological work I have done suggests that the answer is yes. There are "Doaks" and "Dokes" in some Alabama counties who appear to be the same persons (names and ages and sexes match), but the last names are spelled differently in different census lists (1850 vs. 1860, etc.) My mother (whose maiden name was Doak) is a DAR member and has been at this stuff for years. She confirms that the name is sometimes spelled "Doke," but we have no details on how certain families came to adopt the modified spelling.
