Hi Lydia, So glad that you replied! Your information is very interesting. Maybe Josiah stated in his will that the slaves be freed, even after the emancipation proclamation (an executive order, not a law) took effect in Texas, to be sure that they did in fact become freed. Constitutionally slavery was not abolished by the federal government until the 13th amendment was passed in December 1865. I suppose that William Harrison is the mulatto male slave, age 14, of "J S Doaks" listed in the 1860 Census Slave Schedule? Do you know who William's father was and/or what happened to his mother Susan? I wish more genealogical info was available online for Corpus Christi and Nueces County! Thank you for sharing!
