This is an interesting thread.Mike, I think the majority of the lines have a problem with 'depth'.Most public records stink before about 1850 no matter where you are.To string together a few generations past that takes great luck unless you have family documentation that mentions locations.
I think DNA research will have to build foundational know-how using the trees that do go way back.
I did find it interesting you made a distinction between the Scots and the Irish Celts.My guess would be the highlanders are not much better off than the Irish maybe worse.The highlanders were proud of their liniage but were not big on writting.They were not creative at all with names and with the clan structure, even after 1745, you could easily have 10 men in the same small town with the same name.
I guess I am lucky I have not had to do much Irish work.I do know I could not find much Irish information on line, even for 'late stuff' (after 1850).I assumed the records existed as paper.I am curious as to just how good their records are in general.
