Thanks Mike,
I am already a member of the Cullen DNA project at familytreedna: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/cullen/index.htmlhttp://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/cullen/index.html
but I'm wondering what's the point/how should we set out on our project?
I can already find genetic matches thru FTDNA or ysearch or other sites, and I can learn more about my deep ancestry just by my own tests.
I don't think I have any specific genealogical question to answer with my tests (I know my great-great-grandfather Thomas Cullen married in 1864 in Tullycorker townland, Clogher civil parish in County Tyrone, Ireland. And he was age 30 and his father was Bernard Cullen.)
But I have no candiates for who Bernard Cullen's father was and I don't think I will ever find any, since Roman Catholic registers don't start until 1854 in that area, and civil registration of births and deaths didnt start until 1864.
So why bother with a surname project? I am hoping to find a Irish surname project that I can use as a model to get ideas for a Cullen project. Many of the sites I have looked at weren't very inspiring.
Bernie
